Wynn Nature Center

June 24, 2011

The Wynn Nature Center offers over 5 miles of trails, two viewing platforms, benches for resting along many of the trails, a staff yurt and a large deck off of the visitor cabin. The trail system makes up a small portion of the 140 acres of land that comprises the center, the rest of the land is managed as a wildlife refuge and provides an important undeveloped migration corridor for moose and black bears.

They have guided tours or you can walk the trails on your own and during the summer they have youth summer camps and programs for children of all ages.

Today was our first time visiting the center, on Fridays for the remainder of the summer they have a program specifically for 2 to 4 year olds called the Knee-high Naturalist Program. Every week consists of a story hour, craft and nature hike all based around a different theme. This weeks theme was birds. Homer has an abundance of birds and is very popular for bird viewing.

They started off by making and decorating binoculars for viewing the birds. Followed by a story about different types of birds and the places they make their nests. Then they got to see and touch a real birds nest.

After this it was time to get the binoculars on and head out for a short hike in search of some winged creatures.

Penelope had a blast and proclaimed it the "best day ever!", I can't wait to hit the rest of the trails when Chris gets home.
