Look! I harvested my first jalapenos! I am not sure if I picked them too soon but they looked ready to go to me. I read that the longer you wait the spicier they will be. I figured I would pick these early and pick the next batch a little later to taste the difference. Their are more little guys coming and I also have a couple of serrano's and a couple Thai chili peppers starting to grow. I am going to use these peppers tomorrow and see how they taste. I'll let you know!
Since I am not a native of the pacific northwest I was very surprised when Chris told me we had blackberries growing in the woods behind our backyard. Apparently the plants grow wild here and during the summer months are covered with ripe, sweet berries. The rest of the year it is considered a nuisance plant by many. I thought I would take advantage of this yummy weed and sent Regan out to pick me some berries. He was more then happy to do this after I promised to make him a blackberry cobbler. Here is his loot...
and here is the cobbler I promised him... It was my first blackberry cobbler so I had to call my mom in law to ask for a recipe. When we were staying with them I remember she had made a yummy one. It was really easy...You melt 1 cup of butter in a 9X13 baking dish. While it is melting in a 350 oven you mix 2 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar, 3 tbl of baking powder, 1 tsp of salt and 1 1/2 cups of milk. Pour the mixture over the melted butter and then pour 1 1/2 pints of blackberries on top of that. Chris and Regan were complaining that I needed to sugar the berries or they wouldn't be sweet enough and after arguing with them about it for a few minutes I finally gave in and sugared the berries. Apparently 2 cups of sugar is not sweet enough! You bake it in the oven at 350 for about 45 minutes or until it is browned and the batter is cooked through. My cobbler cooked for about an hour and I had to hear "is it done yet?" for an extra 15 minutes. Penelope loved eating the fresh berries but unfortunately her tummy didn't and we had a bad night last night.
By the way today is my birthday!!! I told Chris not to get me anything but Penelope and him are downstairs wrapping my presents. He is also taking me out for a birthday lunch. Yum!

We have been talking about moving Penelope from her crib into her toddler bed but were a little worried about her windows being so low. I have heard a lot of stories of little ones falling out of windows and want to make sure Penelope is safe if she is going to be able to climb out of her bed. I went online and looked up the options for window guards and all of them were pricey and not very attractive. So I came up with an idea and asked Chris if he would make window guards that looked like a picket fence. You see, my plan is to decorate Penelope's room to look like she is outside and I thought the picket fence would be really cute. So this is what Chris came up with... and while price is not an issue when it comes to your little ones safety I have to tell you that it cost him less then $15.00 to make these. Which beats the $60+ price tag we would have to pay for each window if we bought some. He even made them so that they will easily slide out in case of a fire. This is what they looked like after Chris painted them, look how safe Penelope looks peering out from behind her fence. ;)
Yesterday we went to Tsugawa, twice, and after walking around the nursery for what seemed like hours we finally decided on 2 trees. We bought a small pomegranate tree and a little Japanese maple tree. They had so many cool trees it was hard to decide. They even had a Japanese plum tree that I could use for Umeshu, a Japanese plum wine that I am dying to make. More on that in a later post... I really wanted a pomegranate tree because it reminds me of being little at my grandmas house. She had a huge pomegranate tree and we use to eat off it all the time. I hope it will get the sun that it needs here! We have been wanting to get some Japanese maples but the big ones are just so expensive so we found this little guy.
I hope both these trees grow up to be big and beautiful.

Today I made Penelope some moon shaped pizzas and pasta with marinara sauce for dinner. See my cute moon men? :p The pizzas were made on sourdough english muffins with chunky marinara, mozzarella cheese and olive eyes and mouths. I used some moon shaped cookie cutters to shape them. While I was making dinner I gave her some chickpeas (garbanzo beans) to snack on. This was her first time trying them and drum roll please... as evidence that she indeed liked them I present to you Penelope licking chickpea juice (these were of the canned variety) off her plate. Here she is trying to feed her dolly some of her scrumptious pizza. Apparently the pizza made her dolly very thirsty because she kept asking me for water and then would put her sippy cup to her dolly's mouth so she could drink. It was really cute. :) I guess I also need to teach Penelope about using napkins to wipe her face clean.
Chris comes home tomorrow, woohoo!
We have peppers! Look...look... My Jalapeno plant has 2 peppers on it. I was so excited when I saw this I had to take pictures and document it before something ate them. Like this deer that just happened to be relaxing about 20 feet from my garden. I was out there watering and she just sat there and stared at me, drooling over my two peppers no doubt. Ever since we started murdering the slugs my little garden has been thriving. Even my Poblano plant that was eaten down to nothing but a stem is growing away. My Serrano is now twice the size it was when we planted it and the Chocolate Mint has just about taken over the whole garden. I am really excited to plant some more veggies and herbs now.
As I was watering the yard 2 little ones ran up to the lounging momma deer and began nursing. I tried to get a picture but my camera wouldn't focus and I was afraid momma deer would attack me if I got any closer. Do deer attack? :p
